How Far Is It From East Hill to Kalamalka Lake's Beaches?

About Kalamalka Lake
Kalamalka Lake sits south of Vernon, bordering the District of Coldstream. It's about 16 km long, and it's known for its striking colours, which shift between blues and greens through the seasons. The colour comes from light scattering off calcium carbonate in the water. Vernon's heritage records note that the name is loosely translated as the "lake of many colours".
The beaches, closest first
Kal Beach and the Rotary Pier
At the north end of the lake, Kalamalka (Kal) Beach and its Rotary Pier are the closest option from East Hill. Tourism Vernon describes it as a good family stop and a popular launch point for paddleboarders.
Other nearby beaches and parks
- Kirkland Beach: a family-friendly green space with a playground, shade and easy parking.
- Pumphouse Beach: a small sandy beach that turns to shallow, rocky water.
- Sovereign Park: an open grassy area with bocce, volleyball and a launch for kayaks and paddleboards.
Coldstream also has several smaller public access points for non-motorized craft, such as Kalavista, Kinloch and Lisheen Beach.
Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park
For a bigger day out, Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park covers about 3,218 hectares of grassland and forest along the lake. BC Parks lists three main swimming areas with buoys:
- Jade Bay
- Juniper Bay
- Cosens Bay, which is larger and also reachable by a longer trail.
The park has more than 14 km of trails and a viewing platform at Rattlesnake Point. It's day-use only, and camping and campfires aren't allowed. Designated pet beaches are at east Cosens Bay, southeast Rattlesnake Point and west Jade Bay.
Getting there from East Hill
By car
Most East Hill residents drive, and it's about 10–15 minutes to the north-end beaches. Parking fills up on hot summer weekends, so going early or on a weekday evening helps.
By bike
From downtown Vernon, a multi-use path runs through Polson Park and follows Kalamalka Lake Road to the Okanagan Rail Trail trailhead on College Way in Coldstream. The Rail Trail then continues south along a former rail line with a gentle grade of about 1.3%. From East Hill, you start with a downhill ride. The climb home is the part to plan for.
By bus
BC Transit's Route 1 Coldstream/Downtown runs toward Coldstream. Check bctransit.com/vernon for stops and times before you go.
Safety tips for a lake day
- Cliff jumping: BC Parks warns that cliff diving in the park carries a serious risk of drowning and injury because of submerged rocks and debris.
- Rattlesnakes: they live in the park. Wear proper footwear and stay on the trails.
- Swimmer's itch: it can occur in the lake. Towel off and rinse after swimming.
- Heat and sun: bring water and shade, since grassland trails have little cover.
Lake access vs. lake living
